Our privacy promise
What happens in the notebook stays in the family.
Last updated 11 October 2026
Same Moon is a private notebook for a family that's apart for a while. This page explains, in plain words, what we keep, why, and what we will never do. If anything here is unclear, write to us at hello@samemoon.space.
The short version
- Only the people in your family can see your notebooks. There are no public links, feeds or strangers.
- We never look at, listen to, scan, or analyse your photos, drawings or voice notes — no people, no AI, no machine learning, no training.
- No ads, no trackers, no analytics pixels, no selling or sharing data. Ever.
- Children never have accounts, real names, birthdays, emails or phone numbers in Same Moon.
- You can delete a notebook, or your whole family, at any time. Deletion is permanent.
What we keep
- Grown-ups: an email address (or Google sign-in) to log in, a nickname and a little picture. No passwords are stored.
- Children: a nickname you choose, an illustrated avatar, and optionally an age in whole years (used only to pick the right "little wonder" question). Please use a pet name, not a real name.
- Family tablet: a pairing record and a secret key so the tablet stays connected. A grown-up can revoke it instantly.
- Notebooks: what your family chooses to "Leave on our page" — letters, photos, voice notes, drawings, stickers, moon taps and wonder answers.
- Drafts stay only on the device where they were written and are never uploaded.
Photos and voices
- Photos are shrunk and redrawn on your phone before upload, which removes hidden location (GPS), camera and time data.
- Voice notes are recorded only while you hold the record button, capped at two minutes. The microphone switches off the moment you stop, leave the screen, or the app goes to the background.
- Media is stored in private storage. It can only be opened by signed-in family members through short-lived links. It is never transcribed, never converted to text, and never used to identify voices or faces.
Who can see what
- Each family is completely separate; the database itself refuses requests across families.
- A note "for" one child is a gentle label, not a secret. Children sharing one tablet can switch pictures and see each other's notes.
- Grown-ups can remove any child's note. Only the person who began a notebook can delete it for everyone; others can put it away just for themselves.
- The family tablet has no way to invite people, change settings, pair devices or delete notebooks, and the children's screens contain no links out to the web.
Service providers
We use a hosting and database provider to store your family's data securely, and Google only if you choose to sign in with Google. They process data only to run Same Moon. We don't use advertising, analytics or social-media services.
Keeping and deleting
We keep your data while your family uses Same Moon. When a notebook or family is deleted, its pages, photos, voices and drawings are removed from our database and storage — not just hidden. Backups held by our provider roll off within a short period. You can also keep your own copy at any time with "Keep a copy" (print/PDF or archive).
Children's privacy
Same Moon is set up and run by parents and guardians. We collect the minimum about children that the notebook needs, and only with the grown-up's choice. A parent can review, change or delete their children's details from the family page, or ask us at hello@samemoon.space. We follow the spirit of children's privacy laws such as COPPA (US), GDPR (EU/UK) and the UK Children's Code, and are completing a formal legal review before wider launch.
Your rights
You can see, correct, export or delete your family's information at any time in the app, or by writing to us. We'll respond within 30 days.
Changes
If we change this promise in a meaningful way, we'll tell grown-ups in the app before it takes effect. We will never loosen the "no ads, no tracking, no looking at your media" parts.
